Marianne Liebi (Professor at PSI/EPFL) : Röntgenblick: Superman vs. Synchrotron
Röntgen erlauben einen tiefen Blick in Materie und ihre innere dreidimensionale Struktur. Aber warum brauchen wir einen Teilchenbeschleuniger mit 288 m Umfang am PSI in Villigen, wenn Superman das mit einem Blick kann, und jedes Spital einen CT scanner hat? Dieser Vortrag wird die Möglichkeiten von Röntgenbildgebung an einem Synchrotron aufzeigen, und wie wir diese nutzen können um biologische Gewebe zu untersuchen.

Catalytic processes occur all around us, whether by nature’s design or by humans‘ intended application! In my talk, I will describe the most phenomenal feat achieved by catalysis, Haber-Bosch ammonia production and how it has helped us feed our growing population over the past century. Finally, I will provide a perspective on how catalysis is our secret weapon in combatting perhaps the biggest problem of the 21st century: global warming.

Did you know that there are more than 20,000 species of microalgae but less than 0.2 % are commercially exploited?
Did you know that microalgae produce dozens of interesting compounds that are present in food colorants, sunscreens and fluorescent markers?
If the answer to any of these questions is ‘no’, this talk is for you!
I will introduce you to the fascinating world of microalgae and walk you through the current and potential applications of these tiny organisms that are ‘microfactories’ of valuable compounds. A journey from the lake to your drink!
